THP-Ghana was able to complete construction of two epicenters: Matsekope and Fesi-Bame. In addition, all five districts for Ghana’s Regular Program signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among three major stakeholders: the Epicenter Committees, District Assemblies and THP. The MOU sought to commit the parties to provide adequate and continuous support for the development and sustainability of epicenters.
Accomplishments
- Distribution of Farm Input: Farm inputs consisting of 1,464 kgs of seed maize, 550 grams of pepper seed, 185 bags of ammonia fertilizer, 185 bags of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) fertilizer and 32 liters of atrazine (weedicide) have been sold to door-to-door for farmers. The main objective of these inputs was to ensure farmers’ timely and easy access to highly essential farm inputs by removing the problem of long travel distances and high at-market prices. Farmers were also given the requisite education on usage of inputs and possible benefits.Yields and incomes from this year’s second farming seasons will be ascertained during Quarter 4.
- 2011 Microfinance Financial Audit: An external auditing exercise commenced in all 11 epicenters in THP’s regular program. This is to ensure accountability and proper recording of all financial dealings in the MFP. The field exercise was successfully completed in early April 2012 and the draft report is now available.
- Adult Literacy: During the first quarter of the year, in direct result of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) staff regularly encountering difficulties training facilitators, The NFED agreed to train THP-Ghana’s staff as TOTs. A total of 24 staff participated in the training, including all Program Officers for THP’s regular epicenters. This will enable THP to provide ready training for facilitators who handle community-level adult literacy classes. Furthermore, THP has sought and gained approval from the NFED to reproduce copies of Non-Formal Education’s learning materials for its program. The production of the reading materials will help expand the Adult Literacy Program which has been impeded by the difficulty of attaining adequate supplies.
- Community Mobilization Training Program: Animator VCAWs were carried out at epicenters to facilitate greater participation and save costs. Three such workshops were organized for VCAW Animators in the Adomfe, Kyempo and Banka Epicenters in June 2012. Fifty participants – 21 women and 29 men – attended the training workshops.
