During the December 2009 National Farmers' Day celebration organized by Ghana's Ministry of Food and Agriculture, five of The Hunger Project's (THP's) partners from two epicenters (Odumase-Wawase and Adensua-Besease) won various municipal/district-level awards.
These partners have been participating in THP's educational and monitoring activities, which are jointly carried out with extension agents from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, to improve yields and incomes.
At the Kwahu West Municipal Farmers' Day celebration, which was held on the premises of the Nkawanda Epicenter building, the Best Yam, Plantain and Cassava Awards and the overall Best Farmer Award were won by four different partners from the Wawase and Sitey-Kesse communities in the Odumase-Wawase Epicenter.
The Best Plantain Farmer, Comfort Amofa, is a partner from Sitey Kesse in the Odumase-Wawase Epicenter, who has participated in THP Vision, Commitment and Action Workshops (VCAWs) and Women's Empowerment Program (WEP) educational sessions as well as agricultural training programs.
The Best Cocoyam farmer, Margaret Dankwa, is a member of the Food Security Committee of the Odumase-Wawase Epicenter.
Peter Omari Agyapong, the Epicenter Vice-chairman, who is also the "Nkosorhene" (Development Chief) of the Wawase community, won the Best Yam Farmer award.
Mr. Isaac Attah, a partner who has participated in various VCAWs and agricultural programs, won the Overall Municipal Best Farmer Award.
At the Kwahu South District Farmers' Day celebration, Comfort Twumwaa, who is both a TOT and WEP animator, won the Best Maize Farmer Award.
These honorees have pledged to share their experiences with other farmers to improve food security and farm incomes in their epicenters.
